Around 30 women are murdered every year in Austria, mostly by their (ex-)partners. In 2021, a tobacconist in Vienna’s ninth district was brutally attacked in her shop by her ex-partner, set on fire and died of her severe injuries.
This crime scene was transformed into a memorial and art space, FRAU* schafft Raum, to draw attention to femicide and women’s rights as human rights. With their exhibition, Ana Loureiro and Zhanina Marinova question where violence begins and which warning signs women should recognise – based on red flags that were collected in a participatory process online and analogue in cooperation with StoP – Stadtteile ohne Partnerschaftsgewalt.
