Dislocated Democracies in the Caucasus

The Caucasus is a region of constant movement. Bearing in mind current trends in human migration, this roundtable considers how such dislocations affect the social and political reception of democracy. The conversation will explore how Caucasian exiles, refugees, migrant laborers, or cosmopolitan intellectuals navigated, contested, or reinforced democratic ideas and processes over the past century. How do memories of democratic pasts – such as the short-lived Caucasian republics of 1918–1921 – color conceptions of nationhood and belonging both among the Caucasian states and their diasporas?

Independent Space Index 2024

The 7th annual Independent Space Index Festival runs from 31. May until 2. June in the format of coordinated citywide open days. Visitors can see exhibitions and attend special events without pre-registration. The Independent Space Index was founded in 2017 with the aim of strengthening solidarity among like-minded cultural initiatives and highlighting their contribution to the Viennese art scene.

Maskulinismus und rechte Angriffe auf die Demokratie

Die Liaison von Rechtspopulismus und Geschlechterpolitiken hat sich in den letzten Jahren zu einem globalen Phänomen entwickelt. Rechtspopulistische und rechtsextreme Akteur*innen warnen vor einer „Gleichmacherei“ von Frauen und Männern und diffamieren Geschlechtervielfalt. Angriffe auf trans und queere Lebensweisen, feministische Politiken und Gender-, Queer- und Trans-Studies werden auch von konservativen Akteur*innen auf die Agenda gesetzt – ganz besonders in Wahlkampfzeiten. Welche anti-demokratischen Geschlechter- und Sexualitätspolitiken gibt es in Österreich? Welche emanzipatorischen Widerstandspraktiken sind möglich?

When discussing festivals as safe or safer spaces, talk is cheap. But when it comes to implementation, expectations rise: awareness programs, demands for trigger warnings, navigating backlash in the event of political conflict, and much more. While meeting all needs may be impossible, we aim to explore how we can improve — or fail better — by sharing examples of festivals implementing guidelines for „safer spaces“. We address what works, how, and why, followed by an open discussion on the concept.

Cinematic art serves as a powerful catalyst for shifting public perception and has been closely linked with activist causes since its inception. In the realm of short film, many artists are increasingly focused on challenging the status quo and addressing the current socio-political climate, driven by a yearning for change, one short film at a time. We encourage our guests to share films that have shown the activist potential of the moving image and, in doing so, have inspired their own work.

Vienna meets Prague

Vienna meets Prague ist ein mehrtägiges Festival, das die beiden gleichnamigen Städte – sowie Österreich und die Tschechische Republik insgesamt – im kulturellen Dialog verbindet. Von 2. bis 6. Juni finden an verschiedenen Orten in Wien Lesungen, Konzerte, Filmvorführungen und andere Veranstaltungen statt.

Vienna meets Prague is a cultural festival in early summer that puts the two eponymous cities — as well as Austria and the Czech Republic more broadly — into cultural dialogue. From June 2 to 6, book readings, concerts, film screenings, and other events are held in various venues across Vienna.
